Promote the economic empowerment of women and youth in Chad through digital financial and non-financial services
Government of Chad
With banking services almost non-existent outside urban areas, only 7% of Chadians have access to financial services and resort to the informal system or loan sharks. Despite the implementation of the Government of Chad’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy (201-2024), most of the 115 registered microfinance institutions (MFIs) continue to face enormous difficulties in meeting the needs or marginalised groups, particularly small businesses, as their activities are limited by lack of infrastructure, capacity and reliable technological solutions.
The project aims to promote economic empowerment of women and youth through strengthening microfinance institutions to develop responsive, innovative and secured financial and non-financial services, including digital services for vulnerable groups. More specifically, the project seeks to:
Cross-cutting these objectives is the goal to contribute to improving gender equity, nutrition, food hygiene, and climate resilience.
At the national level, the overall project is strongly aligned with the Government of Chad’s National Strategy for Inclusive Finance (2019-2024), Institution-building development Plan (2017-2021). The project will provide systemic support to the microfinance sector and the entrepreneurial ecosystem by contributing to improve the quality and relevance of innovative financial services to women and youth . It will help create conditions for strengthening MFIs and building their capacity to supervise structures (technological infrastructure, equipment, technical assistance, regulations, partnerships, private sector involvement) and improve the required external environment for monitoring and supporting women's groups and young entrepreneurs.
By the end of 2026 the project targets the following expectations:
